Slowdown on different OSes

#1 Post by Grey »

There have been various reports about ToME4 slowing down on Windows, with some theories flying around about it being related to how Windows uses the page file. Some people have no slowdown at all. So, in the interests of science and getting a real idea of what's causing the slowdown, can you please take a moment to answer the following questions:

1. Do you suffer from slowdown?

2. What OS do you use? 32 or 64 bit?

3. How good is your computer compared to modern standards? (crap, okay, good, very good - choose as you feel appropriate, or give CPU/Gfx card/RAM specs if you feel like it)

I get heavy slowing on windows XP home 32 bit. Computer is a 2.1 GHz AMD Athlon 64 desktop with 768Mb of RAM. Video card is an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200.

EDIT: Just tried the pagefile disable fix, and it's working beautifully. Still some slowdown but it's not as slow and doesn't last as long.

AND ANOTHER EDIT: Played for a while and the slowdown came back as fierce as ever. The task manager shows my processor is topping out during the slowdown, though, so that's probably what's holding me back.

I get significant slowdown from lots of particle effects and many monsters on screen, but sometimes even without any of that.

Windows XP 64-bit, with quad core Intel 2.4 Ghz, Radeon 4870 1GB graphics card, 4GB system RAM. ToME4 is the only game I've ever played on this computer that has lagged :( (though I haven't installed anything other than roguelikes in the last couple of years)

XP 32 bit, by todays standards I guess this computer is pretty crappy. It ran Wrath of the Lich king and did alright in 10 man raids but was terrible for 25 mans (like 2-4 fps).

On 2 different computers both with Win XP 32 I get the slow down. Both computers are older, but not horrible. No issues with other programs.

XP 32 bit here. 4 GB ddr3, phenom x4 965 , GT 240. I experience incredibly heavy lag even with page file disabled (which didn't seem to help at all). I do recall older betas being far less laggy, though. So maybe I need to entirely remove all of the old installs?

I can't imagine why I'm lagging at all on my system, though. (It just seems to randomly happen on turns, especially if i'm basically just holding down an up arrow to attack into something with a cursed or something). It feels like it lags on drawing large amounts of numbers popping up, but I dunno if that's true or not.

I have all graphical options turned off, particle effects 0, smoothing 0, etc. I'm playing in a really large resolution with shockbolt, perhaps that could be causing it?

XP 32 bit, 4Gb and a dual core AMD. Below average on todays standard I'd say. For me most problems seem related to large amounts of monsters. Especially summoning mobs are a pain. Deeper dungeons may add to the problems as it looks like Isle of Dread and especially High Peak are much worse than 5-level dungeons with summoners. I play with all graphical options and effects off, no tiles.

Ubuntu, OK(dual core, integrated graphics), no noticeable slowdown almost always, tiles, all effects on

Running on a few year old mac laptop, dual core etc etc. I rarely experience slowdowns, and then it is usually related to a large number of entities/AI (I have stdout scrolling on the side).
<DarkGod> lets say it's intended

1) Yes
2) Win XP 32
3) Good

As mentioned in the corresponding thread, I think the slowdown has nothing to do with computer configuration and appears even if you would use a supercalculator, but it's simply a bottleneck in the code concerning memory management. The engine calls memory management routines periodically, and each time the frame rate is reduced to 1 with the game lagging. Delaying these calls to proper times (when changing level for example) would fix the issue for good.

1. Yes, it lags badly at times.
2. Win7 64 bit.
3. Good. Intel q6600 2.4Ghz, nvidia 8800GTX, 4G RAM

1. Do you suffer from slowdown? A bit, but it's not terrible. It's most noticeable when there are a huge number of monsters.

2. What OS do you use? 32 or 64 bit? Debian 5.0 32-bit, and now Debian 6.0 32-bit (but only recently upgraded).

3. How good is your computer compared to modern standards? The machine with good CPU and crappy integrated graphics gets hit hard by particle effects and clouds and rain. The machine with less-good CPU but an actual graphics card gets hit hardest by huge numbers of monsters, and does better on the graphic effects.

The worst horror stories that I've heard so far all seem to come from Windows users, for whatever that's worth.

I get marginal slowdown, but its frustrating that I have lag on a system that can destroy modern games like Quake 4 and Borderlands.

Win XP Pro 32-bit
3.2 GHz dual core AMD processor
4 GB RAM
512 MB ATI gfx card.

Hope this helps.
And it was such a good idea...

The pre-init.lua fix made a big difference. Much better, thank you. :)
