Can't get ToME to run on my laptop

Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
Help!
I've been trying to get TOME to run on my laptop but not having much luck! When I start the t-engine, the main window opens but the contents of the frame is totally black, except for the mouse pointer, which appears at the top left corner and cannot be moved. My regular mouse still works, though it cannot click on anything inside the t-engine window.
Additionally, the stderr.txt file is empty, however, the stdout.txt file is constantly being updated with information. It starts out listing a number of screen resolutions supported (list includes my current one!), then goes on to list information about creatures and spells. This updating continues until I use Task Manager to kill it (can't close it normally)
I've tried various screen resolutions from 1024/768, up to the 1440/1280 with no difference in behavior. My video card is an ATI Radeon X1250. I'm running on XP Professional, with all current patches, etc.
I'm having fun with TOME at home on my desktop, and really wanted to bring it with me on a trip. Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
You mention Task Manager - so I assume you are running Windows?
If that is the case can you help us out by giving us details of what version of Windows you are running? There are people here who can help out on this front (I run Linux so am of limited help).

Re: Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
I have to ask, OP, what happened if you just let the screen run for a bit -- say five or ten minutes? Perhaps even fifteen. Try that, and if it still won't function, upload your stdout.txt (after you've let T4 stay open for a bit) to somewhere. Having the contents of that file would likely be a tremendous help for us trying to help you.
Re: Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
Ok, I'll give it a go. I don't think I ever let it go longer than a minute or so. Gonna be a day or two before I can get back to it though. Thanks!

Re: Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
I accidentally left this running for over an hour, so I've zipped up the stdout file. I definitely don't see anything helpful here! Btw, the program never started even after an hour+
thanks for looking at it.

Th'worst of current minds in the IRC channel have looked at it... as you say, there's not much in th'stdout that looks wrong.
In fact, it appears like things should be running fine for you. Best guess of th'least qualified to guess seems to be a video card issue; while you're waiting for better folks to take a gander, perhaps you can give your graphics card info, along with any other relevant system specs you might have access to? If nothing else, it'd help the more tech savvy deconstruct th'issue to your benefit

Re: Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
Is there a way to remove the background menu animation?
...a moment while a check that myself...
The answer: yes, put in a boot_menu_background.cfg file in the settings folder.
Anyway.
The reason I mention this is that I often had hangups while starting the game whenever I switched desktop or selected another window than ToME, and they had the same standard output than in your case. While I could just wait until the menu booted up, I simply decided to disable the animation, solving my problem. Maybe you have a similar issue.

Re: Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
Marcotte,
You nailed it!
My installation did not have a boot_menu_background.cfg file, so I created it and inserted the entry you suggested and voila! main menu appears. Interestingly, my desktop copy had this file and setting already in place. It (desktop install) was a beta20 (no B) originally (I've upgraded it since), whereas my laptop was a beta20b install from the start.
Yay! Now I'm mobile. My thanks to you and everyone else who took time to review my problem here.

Re: Can't get ToME to run on my laptop
Okay, I am running Tome 4, version 29, the same video card as the OP and again a laptop, and am having the same issue. However, I just downloaded the file, then extracted it, but can't find where to put the data to disable the opening animation. I am using Vista, and also need to know how to make the file, (Could I use Notepad and enter the code, then save it as a .cfg?) and again my biggest issue is I don't know where to find the settings folder. Thank you for any help that can be given!
