Trapped by the mage-quest dude

I was walking around looking for the guy who needs staffs and rings. He popped up behind me after I crossed the chokepoint west of the mage city, trapping me in a small area of the map. I was lucky, and was a mage, and had a few of his items already, and had enough gold to buy the remaining ones in the mage city, but otherwise that game would have been over.

You should either be able to walk past the wanna-be mage on the world map or he should appear in a fixed (safe) location, or there should be no choke-points in the region where he might appear.

Or there should be a second way out of the Sandworm Lair region, like there used to be before the map revamp (north as well as south).
