Vor Armoury (and other sites) no longer appear on map

Hi there, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Experiencing serious bugs with the ToME game when playing an Ogre Withering One (L41, named Barelyevil; also with an earlier 'version', L28, named Octophant, that no longer loads).
1. The latest bug is that Vor Armoury and other sites (eg Vor Pride) on the World Map no longer appear and cannot be accessed. Even knowing where they should be and moving the character to that map location no longer provides the "Change level" option on the drop-down menu. So basically I cannot proceed further in the quest. This happened after I activated the Rod of Recall to return to the Sher'Tul Fortress after clearing out the Vor Armoury treasure room (with the aim of returning to fight the muti-hued wyrms after dropping the numerous items in the storage room).
2. Once I was in the fortress, the servant worm that walks ("servant of Barelyevil) had problems. All the items in its weapons inventory mysteriously moved themselves to the Transmorgification Chest.
Other problems with playing an Ogre Withering One:
3. the L28 character no longer loads, the bar reaches 100% but nothing happens.
4. Activating Overgrowth moves objects around on the map as you "walk through walls ... causing a small quake destroying and rearranging nearby terrain". If you do this in Escort mode, and are close to the escort's portal, the Escort will no longer be able to find the portal EVEN if you clear everything between the escort to the portal using the dig function providing a clear path. Talking with the escort to reveal the location of the portal gives random directions (eg "close to the NE", close to the south, even close to ???)
I truly love ToME but bugs have prevented me from ever getting past the Far East. Please help as it is so frustrating investing so much time in developing and progressing a character to find it completely wasted.
Also, one other thing, I loved how the old ToME was all about magic and items with egos (like LOTR) but the latest versions has (more advanced?) steam powered guns and saws which I find off putting. Until I actually play Embers I wish the guns and mechanised saws and the Ambush NPC monsters that use them could be unloaded.
