Problems with updating/installing

Normally run the GOG.com version, which hasn't been updated yet. (this is not a complaint about that, to forestall those responses)
Opened it today and since I'm logged in to my te4 account, the DLCs all updated, which I figured might cause a problem with my 1.5.10 saves. Rather than test that proposition, and since I've linked all the DLC to my te4 account anyway, I went and downloaded the linked "Windows installer" from the front page, which appears to be just the launcher, which goes and downloads the latest version.
I uninstalled the GOG version, but just to be safe I told the installer to use an entirely different and new folder. It downloaded the file and locked up right at the end of verifying the download. I waited 10 minutes before I decided to kill it and try again, and it locked up several more times during the verification step, all the time at different percentages complete. Reinstalled the gog version and looked in the folder and it looked like the launcher was installed in that version as well, so I ran the launcher in there. It downloaded the patch, verified everything, and it all seemed to be correct. When I tried to run it, however, it locked up at the "T-Engine4" white window that usually only pops up for a second and went no further.
Thought it might have been my saves/config that were a problem, so I uninstalled and told the GOG installer to delete all the saves and config (no great loss). Installed it fresh from GOG, and ran the launcher to update. Same problem. Installed it fresh again and did not update, and it launches normally (without logging in), so obviously something breaks somewhere when the GOG version updates as well.
Then I downloaded the zip file for 1.6.0 full for Windows. That has actually functioned and opens fine. Not sure what the issue might be, but I figured I might mention it here in case it's indicative of a bigger problem.
