Scrolling problem

This has been an annoyance as long as I have played ToME (multiple years).
I am currently in the Temple of Creation, with "Scroll Distance" set to its maximum of 50. However, I am currently on level 3, in the upper right hand corner, and the enemy I am trying to attack is under the overlaid map. I can shift-drag to scroll my character, but then when I try to use a projected weapon (clicking on the weapon icon), it re-uncenters, and I can't target the opponent. Ugh.
Yes I can "solve" this by (temporarily) widening the ToME window (so that it no longer fully fits on my screen), but this is an ugly "solution" IMO. I can name other areas where this happens (such as level 2 of the back entrance to the Vor Armoury), but one example is bad enough!
EDIT: it seems that middle-click on the map followed by hitting enter removes the map, though I only found this out after clicking around with a live enemy, and even now I can't get the map back. The entriety of "overlays" of character/enemy info (particularly when it oscillates from to appearing on the left/right) is another personal annoyance.
I think I also had problems trying to click the "level up" button in the upper left with a golem when playing an alchemist (it would typically want to think this was a movement, and I had to left-click on the golem and manually select "Level Up!" from the menu).
