It means the path finding can't find a path.

maybe they should be able to phase through walls since they are time elementals, though that would make them much more dangerous but it kinda makes sense. elementals are made of their elements. like it could find a 4d path, could melee from a distance, but reduced accuracy through the 4d path.

maybe if notices the astar is blocked then would act as if target at range is adjacent for an attack, replace melee with a range attack that pretends to be melee, and target would be able to counter also.

or could rethread the timeline to a reality where the player and time elemental are right next to each other and whatever was in the way gets swapped to where the time elemental was, so it moves next to you via a hyperpath simulated this way, then at end of the time elemental's action, the probablity reverts to normal placement.

or it could be like the fearscape zone, the time elemental draws you into a temporal rift if the astar is blocked, and you appear next to each other. all time elementals on the map would go there.

i dont suppose two zones could be on top of each other at the same time? so for each grid there would be an "a" and "b", and normal enemies would all be in the "a" versions but all time elementals would only be in the "b" versions, and their map would have no walls, and they could thus phase through any entity in an "a" version since they are overlapped in a "b" version.

It is because the walls are transparent, and it confuses both the player and the AI.
Really, they should just be normal walls.
