Game won't start after patch.

When I try starting the game after it updated to 1.3.1, I get a small window with "T-Engine4" in the title and an empty white content. Nothing further happens.
There is no entry at all in the te4_log.txt (file size 0 byte).
A short history of my usage of the game:
I got it from the most recent humble bundle. Humble provided a download link, which led me to the download of a zip file with version 1.2.5 in it.
I started it on my windwos 7 desktop after unzipping (no internet connection at the time), and it ran without a hitch. I played through the tutorial with no problems.
Afterwards I copied the folder to my windows 8.1 notebook, there the game ran, but had a weird resolution issue, where it only displayed part of the screen, despite running exactly the same resolution as the desktop (1920x1080 in both cases). No reset option or changing of resolution changed that, it just changed the viewable part of the screen around a bit.
The next day, I had a net connection available, and the launcher showed two patches available, which brought the version to 1.3.1.
After that, the game consistently shows the white engine window without responding at all. I thought maybe it took some time starting, but there was no change even after leaving it running overnight.
The result is the same for the windows 8.1 notebook.
I can still run the 1.2.5 version on both computers with the same issue on the notebook as described above.
Anyone got a hint what went wrong, or how I can fix it?
