ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

So I don't exactly know how Beyond the Flesh's damage is calculated but if i have a battleaxe with a base power of 22.5 - 33.8 it only does about 15 dmg (vs. 1 armour) per hit. Is there some kind of damage reduction effect in effect here because I cannot figure out why it's doing so little damage. Or is it just bugged?
