ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I gave the staff of absorption to the apprentice mage, and then went and talked to the elder in last hope. The dialogue went as normal and I handed over the staff that I no longer had over to him. There wasn't any dialogue from the apprentice mage either...

i did that not that far ago for achievement, there wasn't any bug, the mage died (you probably didn't pay attention to the message which described his death), no angolwen portal appeared, i took the staff from the ashes and gave it to the elder. well, it's cruel to the poor guy but achie~vement... :3 that's how it's supposed to be

I didn't get any message. He just went poof. At least, I think... Oh well.

it's not pop up, it's at the lower left side of the screen where you see your combat log etc
