Locked up while viewing log

After a large scale battle, I needed to see if I'd killed a rare that had been teleporting around.
I hit ctrl-m to view the log and started scrolling up using the up arrow. This was a super slow process (way slower than it has any right to be, since it's just text). I tried using the scroll bar with my mouse to no real effect, so I went back to using the up arrow.
After a few pages, the whole game just locked up. I may have been hitting up arrow too fast for it (it was slowwwww) or something.
It took about 3 minutes for the game to 'catch up' and unfreeze (thankfully, it did).
I'm on the latest steam version of the game, playing on a (half decent) laptop.
