Game occasionally locks up and *will not* go away

This may be a quirk of my (4+-year-old) laptop in particular, but it'd be nice if it wasn't and somebody knew a solution.
Occasionally, while I'm playing TOME, the game will lock up and become non-responsive. I don't think this is a too-advanced-graphics issue, as it's happened while I've been on my inventory screen and cheerfully transmogrifying stuff without a boss or special effect in sight.
It sits there taking up the whole screen with the little circle cursor hovering uselessly, and trying to tab out of it doesn't work -- it tries to stay always-on-top, and the only way to get into another program is to use Task Manager to minimise it.
I wouldn't actually mind this if the game would then proceed to go away. But the "This program has stopped working" dialogue box does absolutely nothing when I click the "close" arrow. Going back into Task Manager and selecting End Process on t-engine.exe does nothing. Ending process tree from Resource Monitor or some other source (which seems like it should be the same thing, but has oddly worked on a couple of recalcitrant programs in the past) does nothing. Someone suggested opening a command prompt and using something called Taskkill. It reported that it had successfully closed the program. It had not. The wretched thing was still there. Someone else suggested starting a new Explorer session. This killed everything except TOME. It seems like the only way of getting it to go away is to reboot the computer.
I suppose I could always start a second copy of TOME, but I'd be worried about making something mess up with regard to my data -- and I'd inevitably switch to the wrong one next time I was tabbing around, which would be annoying.
I'm on Windows 7, if that makes any difference.
