Companions/escorts causing game crash

Every time I have had an allied follower spawn, the game immediately crashes. This has happened with the beginning of the dwarf adventure well as the random escort missions throughout the game. This is the version that is downloaded off of Steam and I'm unaware if this is a known issue or fixed.
