ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

The title pretty much sums it up. Up until today I was able to play the game just fine, and only did 2 things worth of note. First of all I downloaded Sageacrin's item tweaks addon, second I tried starting the game with a compiled git .exe downloaded from the development thread. (The download only provides the executable and a debug launcher so I assumed that's what I was meant to do.)

Both with it and the original exe, with and without the addon in question in my folder, the game will load to 100% and stay at the loading screen. I've also gone as far as extracting a fresh copy of 1.0.4 and deleting the secondary TE4 folder in my User directory. (After backing up my Vault and Profiles, naturally.) All to no avail. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

You actually deleted the new addon you downloaded and then tried again? I had an instance the other day where even an addon that was turned off could cause problems with the new game (or loading existing games) would hang at 100%... Had to completely delete the addon to get the problem to go away.

Yes, I tried completely clearing my Addons folder and also tried extracting a fresh t-engine copy. Neither of which work.

It does nothing but repeat that stack dump nonsense after that.

Update: I tried extracting a 1.0.1 copy as well, which doesn't work either.

Does ToME make any additional folders or anything like that? I have no idea what else could have changed to make the game stop working regardless of version and even after deleting the T-Engine folder.

T4 stores a bunch of settings in...well, on my XP-based computer it's Documents and Settings->Username->T-Engine.

What you're actually supposed to do is check out a copy of the code base, then put the executable/debug launcher in the same folder to launch the game.

Yeah, I think that's the same T-Engine folder I've tried deleting. I know for a fact it's the correct one because when I do my game defaults to fullscreen, and when I restore it it goes back to windowed. However, I'll try setting up and running a proper SVN version and see if it appeases the dark gods and fixes my game.

Nevermind, due to download issues I won't be able to get the code base. I'll just have to hope there's a way to fix this issue by changing something I already have on the computer.

Update: I've tried Disk Checking, (old HDD showing signs of corruption) System Restore, and completely removing my User/T-Engine folder as well as all game installations, freshly extracting and trying both 1.0.4 and 1.0.1, all to no avail. I seriously have no idea what to do at this point.

Great success! I managed to solve the issue. The problem seems to have stemmed from the fact that my ToME 4 game folder was inside my user/downloads directory, however I have two completely different user/downloads directories with the same name (don't ask me how that happened, I don't know either.) and I can only assume it caused some directory confusion on boot. After exhausting all other options, I tried running the game from my desktop (all previous attempts were actually done from the same directory) and it worked immediately.

As for why it had worked up until now, I have absolutely no idea.
