Armour of Shadows: unlit tiles get relit

The "Armour of Shadows" prodigy says "Any time you deal darkness damage, you will unlight both the target terrain and your tile."
I have an Anorithil using this in the Flooded Cave and in the Temple of Creation. The results are wildly inconsistent. Sometimes after zapping something with a moonlight ray, or twilight surge, or an automatic darkness projectile from Hymn of Moonlight or Corona, I can mouse over myself and see the word "Lit". Other times, the word "Lit" does not appear, and my armour and armour hardiness are increased.
As near as I can tell (and this is supported partially by discussions in IRC), something is causing the darkened tiles to become lit once again. Sometimes it happens immediately, on the same turn, before I can even see the result. Sometimes it takes a turn or two. I couldn't find any reliable pattern to it.
I've tried in both 1.0.4 and Git. Same behavior.
Some people on IRC say it's working as documented because there's nothing that promises the tile won't automatically relight itself.
If there's something that's causing tiles to become relit, I'd really like to know about it.
