ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

Could be adventurer class weirdness. The assassin lord didn't spawn in the unknown tunnels. I could speak to the merchant before I murdered everybody else down there, then he had nothing to say to me.

I have the same problem, I've attached the save. Just go to the next floor and you'll see the Assassin Lord doesn't spawn. I have the saved game zipped if you want it but it exceeds the 256KB limit on this forum. Just email or PM me if you want the save.
