If it had +max mana, I think switching to another item deactivates it (as you are over the limit, before it is brought back down to your maximum)

my old tool hadn't +max mana.This error to have nothing to do with it.
Regardless of whether the items had +max mana, are likely to interrupt the skills

Item swaps check pre-use functions to disable things like shield wall, berserker, etc.

When you swap items your mana must be above the minimum to start the sustain so it disables it. It's currently intended behavior on most talents, though I'm not sure if it's desired behavior on this one.
