Sacrificed myself, no Temporal Mage unlock

(first post!) I assume this is a bug, if not, feel free to move it to general!
Playing as a level 20 Temporal Warden with 0 deaths, I find my future self in Daikara. Consulting the Wiki, I see: "Get killed by your future self in Daikara, playing as a Temporal Warden."
So, I go ahead and intentionally die in order to unlock the Temporal Mage. Much to my chagrin, I not only failed to unlock the Temporal Mage class but also lost a precious life, which I didn't expect. I gained the quest "The Way We Weren't" but it has no instructions about how to continue it. I checked the mage's town in the mountains (my only logical lead) and nobody had anything to say about it.
I'm rather perturbed about this. The wiki instructing people to kill themselves in a roguelike for no benefit is utterly frustrating. Do I simply have something else to do to complete this quest, or is it bugged? Other posts imply that I should immediately get a popup, and that I shouldn't have lost a life.
Please advise!
