[b38] Trapped! No stairway or portal after killing boss

Made my way to the second level of the unknown tunnels, challenged and killed the leader of the bandits/assassins.
No stairway appeared when the leader died - or if it did try to appear, it may have conflicted with a volcano randomly popped during the fight via the Fiery Choker?
Teleporting out using the rod of recall seems to have counted as completing the quest, so this is a minor bug - or perhaps it is working as intended? It's a bit confusing as the merchant asks you to help him get out.
