Fortress shadow disappeared

In b37, when I had enough energy to open the farportal room, I got the quest that called me back to the fortress. I went there but the fortress shadow, the "butler", has disappeared. He is nowhere to be found, the orb does nothing and there doesn't seem to be anything to do. I can provide a save if needed.
