Slow Worldmap

The worldmap has got really slow for me. I move a square and then have to wait about 5 seconds before moving again. This first occurred near the Old Forest at around level 8 with an ALchemist.

There is absolutely no effect of this srt within the locations/dungeons.

EDIT: reloading had no effect but it seems to be a problem specific to that character.

This is not the 'garbage' slowdown problem

I also didn't check very far with another character: just enough to reach the worldmap and see if it the problem was persisting.

The following fix (posted elswhere on the forum) in game\loader\pre-init.lua did not work:
collectgarbage("setpause",100)
collectgarbage("setstepmul",400)
collectgarbage("restart")
..unless I applied it wrong (the .lua had a bunch of 'funny' characters and no linebreaks)

Edit: I did try turning particle density right down to no effect.

Guess no one else has had this one.

Little more info: if I try to enter a dungeon while the ~5seconds is passing I get the text saying "there is no way out of this level here" so the program is receiving my instructions in some fashion.

I experienced a general slowdown yesterday, similar symptoms like yours. Turns out in the background my browser somehow crashed and that zombie process was slowing ToME down.

Might be worth checking out if there are other processes that behave slugish and terminate them.

It's not other processes -though ToME is only using 50% of my CPU at any time (I speculate it's only using one Core)

It's definitey something to do with that character

Timlagor, I was just about to make a post with the exact same problem:

-The slowdown is specific to one somewhat-new character (I haven't made any new ones to see if it persists, but old chars are fine),
-T-engine is using a relatively tiny amount of memory/cpu,
-It only affects the world map (every zone is fine). It takes about 5 clicks/key presses to move one tile, and running doesn't work. Saving, reloading, force-crashing... nothing helps.

Okay, so it's character specific too. Maybe you should upload a save?

Here is my own save: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3152927/Slow%20 ... 20Save.zip
Can someone see if the problem is still there on their own computer?

There IS a fix for this I just discovered, though it can be potentially game-breaking under certain circumstances.

*While in-game, go to any zone and save the game. Exit the save.
*Go to your save folder
*Enter the corrupted world map savegame folder
*Delete zone-wilderness.teaz
*Open game and go to world-map, save

If you unlocked the portal to Angolwen, it will probably be closed for good, and if you were a magic user, you won't be able to complete Storming the City, and Derth might be back to the way it was before if you were above 12.
Everything will be hidden again.
This might reset encounters, I'm not sure.

So it's a corruption to an individual file?
I could just start another Alchemist then...
(won't take me nearly as long second time round though I'll doubtless miss out on getting the ridiculous number of Escorts and Vaults in the first two dungeons)

[I am a magic user who hasn't done the Storming and had been to Angolwen]

Yeah, as far as I can tell something happens to the wilderness file. Resetting it through deletion solves the problem, but it also introduces a bunch of new ones. The lumberjack quest area, Angolwen, the Last Hope graveyard, and probably the Orc/Dwarf dungeon and tower too; all gone if already unlocked.

Well a partial solution is better than none certainly.

Is there any way to reset the relevant NPCs so they can be unlocked again?

More importantly: what causes the problem and is there a way to avoid it?

Is there an easy way to do that?
Website contact gives me a form not an e-mail address and the pm system here doesn't seem to include attachments.

Also does 'save file' mean everything in the folder tome\save\charactername ?
I expect i can find somewhere to host it (and link -like the one above) if there isn't an easier way but I don't have time to work that out how right now.

The slow world map happens to me as well. I haven't noticed a particular pattern, except it strikes all of my characters between lvl's 8-12.

Also, it doesn't just affect the world map, it also occasionally happens individual towns, dungeons, etc. Sometimes I have a clone of my current character when I enter that particular place. When that happens, I will nuke the cloned character with whatever abilities I have at my disposal and the slowdown in that area will correct itself (sometimes after one or two screen changes.) Other times, no clone will be made and the current area will be permanently slow.

Overall, I really dig the game and look forward to every new update. Sure, it is a bit slow at times, but man it is a lot of fun. Thank you for your work.
