[b34] Instant talents not instant when invoked via item

Specifically, immediately after I use my cloak of the hunt, the enemy is given an opportunity to act. I suspect that Blinding Speed is actually instant when it is a talent, but when attached to an item it requires a turn. The description for the item is copied from the talent, but Usage Speed: instant is no longer true in the new context.

I don't know of other items with this problem.

Also, I'm still enjoying the hell out of this game. :D

I noticed that but I don't think it's really a bug. While the talent itself may be instant when used by someone who knows it, *using the item* could still take some time.

I certainly agree about item usage possibly taking some time.

Still, the item description is totally misleading.

Also, do single turn talents then take two turns when activated via an item?

Oh... that could be an unintended change. I can't confirm either way, but weren't Eden's Guile instant-use before? Are they still instant-use now, or did that change with the item-activation bug fix in 34?

I don't think so - if the talent takes a turn to use, I'm assuming you can do activation AND targetting together.

Perhaps SOME items should indeed be instant use, like Eden's Guile which are an artifact, after all.

Heh, I should ask the forum for mechanics information more often. Sparky just dropped Eden's Guile for my character. I put them on, then wandered around until I found a Xorn. I was immediately adjacent to the Xorn, and activated the boots:

Code: Select all

[LOG]	Buttercup speeds up.
[LOG]	Xorn uses Constrict.
[LOG]	Xorn misses Buttercup.
So it appears that Eden's Guile is no longer (assuming it ever was... wasn't it?) instant-use. However, at least the item activation appears to occur before the monsters get a turn. Assuming I can trust the logfile messages. They've been known to appear in the wrong order before.

P.S.: Dear forum: what are the mechanics behind the Glory of the Pride, the tome called Gems and Their Uses, and elemental voratun longwords of projection?

The activation order was fixed in b34 (and there was much rejoicing!).

Eden's guile's never been instant, to the best of my knowledge, though. None of the item-activated instant talents are. All item activated talents have always been one turn use, turn order buggery of earlier versions regardless.

... mechanics? Glory is just passives, the tome is a quest-enabler (and has no other use, s'far as I know), and... projection weapons. That one I'm not sure of. But I can check really quick!

Edit: Projection activates the wave of power talent. Which... makes a damage multiplied normal attack at range. So it'll spread any on-strike or on-hit damage.

There's no way Eden's Guile could have been instant before -- the whole issue that was fixed recently, after all, was that items would use up your turn before they even consulted what the talent you were invoking actually did, so nothing in Eden's Guile could prevent it from using up a turn at that point.

If its intended, then its intended, But I do feel that instant abilities should be instant - Whether activated or talented

I think it's not exactly intended, it's just that item activation doesn't pay attention to what's being activated. If there was a talent that took three turns to activate it would still take one by item.

The fix really is to remove the activation time line from talent descriptions on items. All items take a turn to use and that's that.

Well, it'd be nice for instant-activation items to be possible. So perhaps there should be a tag that can be applied to items to make them instant-activation.

Sorry, you missed the joke. I had asked about Eden's Guile, and the game dropped it... so I asked about other things I wanted to game to drop for me.
