[B33] Storming the City

After completing Storming the city Derth remains dark and no villagers come back.

In my game the city was under storm before I ever visited it. I was playing as a Yeek and was already 13 or 14th level by the time I exited the Halfling Ruins. Because of this the Shady Rogue was never available for the arena quest.

This is not a bug. The arena guy is now available until level 13 which is enough for yeeks on nightmare as far as I know. The rest is intentional.

What's the rationale? All this seems to accomplish is forcing every player to make a beeline for Derth after their first/second dungeon, thereby reducing variety in the early game.

Reducing variety how? Go to Derth, get your free 2 generic points and be happy about them, and then go wherever else you want. It takes 3 minutes to get to Derth, get through the arena, and get out, and you're complaining about it?

I should have been more specific.

The bug that remains:
Derth stays dark, even after the could has been removed. The village isn't properly repopulated.

This is a purely aesthetic matter, but a fairly important one seeing how you just saved the town. You expect to be, at least, visually rewarded with a (mostly) restored town.

The village never got repopulated before. The darkness should be gone after Urkis is killed, and if it doesn't, then yeah, it's a bug.

What is your personal investment in the current state of affairs, that you should criticise me for asking a question, instead of answering it or leaving it for someone who can?

And to satisfy your curiosity, I am doing a DitL right now, and it is a minor inconvenience to the story to have to make my dwarf character make a beeline for a small village at the other end of the known world as soon as he steps outside his home town.

If that inconvenience has a good game design reason, then that's fine - the game wasn't really designed for roleplaying, after all. But if not, there's no reason to leap to its defense just because its negative impact is small rather than large.

I've wondered about that too. Out of interest, do the Derth shops reopen after you finish the quest?

The shops reopen, yes.

So people obviously survived, but most of them (except for one(?)) stay inside for the rest of their lives. And everything stays dark.

The town stays dark, which should be fixed. Whoever survived Urkis' gwelgoroths etc. remains in the town, everyone else is gone. I think the best thing would be to have the town repopulate and the clouds disperse, not immediately, but after some time has passed. Lots of other stuff happens after Dreadfell, it could happen then.

Afaik, all the villagers are there when the event occurs. However, the air elementals nearly instantly annihilate them. As a result, it seems like they're simply "gone." I can assure you they don't disappear--one playthrough, through the use of a movement infusion, I was able to reach the middle of town and saw a villager alive, and he was instantly vaporized by an air elemental as soon as I slowed down (movement infusion expired). What's happening I'm sure is that the shady rogue is getting zapped by air elementals--it's not that you can't do his quest after level 13, it's that he dies and can't give it to you anymore. To corroborate this, the wiki says that there's an achievement for saving Derth from the storm without a single NPC dying (which seems ridiculously impossible afaik, but it's there nonetheless).

You can occasionally see the odd rare civilian making a stand against the gwelgoroths, though he'll still fall eventually. The "Save Everyone" acheivement requires a bit of creative preparation, the way I hear it.
