keybindings problems

problems with new keybindings...

Noticed that when I went to make new keybindings, all the selections I make are capitol letters.
If I hold down shift+key, it gives me (properly) [S]+<key>.
If I have Caps Lock on, it gives me same as with Caps Lock off.
Since I'm an old rogue/angband player, I use <hjkl> for UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT, etc.
I also use "\" as my chat key.
Noticed that if I want to chat, and I press "\" once, it brings up the chat box, with a "\" as an already typed character.
In that same chat box, if I want to type "h", i have to type "H" or it moves the focus off the chat window.... but if I keep pressing "h" then it will roll around back to the chat window, and eventually populate the chat window with an "h" as it moves back...
No luck at all on the lower case "L".

The same phenomena happens in other text fields, like the name field.

I don't know if it makes any difference that I'm on a laptop with no number pad and no number lock, a dell studio 1550 running win 7, but I doubt it.

[edit]Also, I can no longer modify targeted spaces with Shift+direction.... have to use the mouse??? Ouch.

I've noticed all the same things.

In fact, I've just abandoned a L10 character that recalled out of an escort mission by a single keypress of 'v' (use item).

I believe the intention of the change was to make alternate bindings (for us roguelike antedeluvians, that's HJKL) functional as scroll keys on the item interfaces, which is awesome and is something I've wanted for a long time.

If this is done, though, probably whatever keys are specified (hjkl) ought not to be used to numerate inventory items or as whatever menu option. So the alphabet of items would go something like 1234567890abcdefgimnop[...].

As for the key bindings appearing as capital letters in the key binding interface, well, that one mystifies me.

BTW, could we specify that this is particularly a b33 problem? I'm worried that without proper labelling this might not attract the immediate attention it needs.

That would only really be a hack-fix, because the issue persists no matter what keys you bind. Chiefly I rebind use-ability to 'a', for quick (or at least easier than 'm') access to things that don't necessarily require a hotbutton, such as spacetime tuning, teleport: angolwen, deja vu/vision - abilities which I use infrequently but would clutter my available keys. Since b33, doing so attempts to automatically use the ability in the 'a' slot, normally attack. This is an issue immediately on starting a new game because I do not bind my sustains, only accessing through the use-ability menu. This is also an issue, albeit delayed from game start, with use-item (which I bind to 'q') and possibly some other inventory functions (though I don't remember which all I rebind and which are default).
