[b31]Alt-Tab causing unplayable slowdown.

This has only begun recently, I play windowed and often alt-tab to chat on IRC (A lot of the time about ToME, only been playing a few days, splatted a few characters around level 10ish, really enjoying myself)
Today, everytime I alt-tab and go back to the game, it takes about 5 minutes to respond to one keypress or mouseclick, and I have to painstakingly save my game and restart. Do you guys have any ideas what might be causing this?
Sorry for a topic over something seeming frivolous, but it's rather annoying
