(pre-b29) can't see message log while viewing inventory

Sometimes a message is displayed in the message log when you try to wield or use an item in inventory. For example, if you try to wear an item that you don't have the prereq's for, then a message in the message log tells you so. The issue in pre-b29, though, is that you can't see the message log while you have the inventory open, so you don't see the messages that you are supposed to see! Perhaps a popup window with the message would be appropriate.
