Strange behavior of escort

I found a sun paladin escort in trollmire lvl2. No ennemies in view, and the portal was close to the entrance. Great!!!
But the escort had a very strange behavior. He just ignored the portal and is now stuck in some trees.
He does not seem to chase any ennemy. He just does want do go some where else.... (see screenshot with the portal at the top in the middle)

No problem.
But how do I do that. It is only 1 Mb, but it is too much for the forum attachment...

My guess is a monster right east of the paladin, in the dark area.

That would not explain why he rushed here from at least 10 or 12 tiles away... There was absolutely no monster between the stair and the actual position...

Check the tooltip on your escort. It should say "Target: foo" if there's a foo monster hidden. It it says "Target: none", then it's a path calculation problem.

Yep. Target: Coperhead Snake
The problems are:
* how can he see the hidden coperhead snake (do NPC 'cheat' and look behind obstacles and at such a long distance?)
* why does he chase this poor animal while he could just go to the portal which is his *real* target?

Just wondering, ghostbuster, are you playing beta 26, or beta 26b?

Had a similar and even stranger problem in the old forest. I got an escort (again a sun P), I started exploring the level, but the escort just did not want to leave the stairs. The tooltip indicated that he was chasing (?) a grizzly. So I started to dig the trees close to his position to find the animal, but there was nothing.
I checked with the Burning Star and there is absolutely nothing but trees in any direction, for at least 10 tiles...
See the screen captures before and after using the Star.

This is the same old bug. The grizzly is probably on the complete opposite side of the level, and the shortest way to get there is calculated by going off limits to the left. Ths bug affects a ton of other stuff too...

One solution to this problem would be to forbid the escort to chase anything at all. It is generally more annoying than useful and they are too weak for most monsters. They should just try to reach their portal...

I was just searching threads before reporting this same behavior. My escorted alchemist was stuck at the left edge of Trollmire(2). He wasn't free to travel until I killed a stone troll at or near the same vertical position but at the opposite edge of the screen. The stone troll was also engaged and wouldn't move from his location.
Anyway, just confirming what PowerWyrm said.
