I get a message informing me that the location is terrifying and I fear for my life... in Last Hope and Angolwin. Presumably, it's a "this is way out of your level" indicator, but...

Are you undead? I had that when playing a ghoul.
As you get higher level, it'll tell you its too easy. Think of it as a warnign of what would happen if fou picked a fight

I'm guessing that the message is based on the prescence of high-level creatures on the map you enter (compared to your level).
I dunno about last hope, but the archmage in Angolwen is level 50
