Several times when I asked the escort where the portal was, I was near the right edge of the screen and his answer was only partly visible, the remainder had gone off of the map. I would only see if it was near or far, not the direction.

I believe the escortee's response is also visible in the lower-left info box, so long as you didn't get attacked in the same round and push the info off the top of it.
