Mob Pathing in b16

Mobs still get confused by corners. In this example, the orc has moved to the position shown and will not proceed to engage the character (at lower right) or retreat from the corrosive vapors (shown in highlight). An entire train of mobs can be killed this way with no risk to the character, as each one moves into the damage field and stays there until it dies. Then the next mob does the same, etc. etc...

Did the orc actually "see" you? If not, he didn't set his target yet, so you can kill him, he won't ever move...

No, it never had direct LOS on me. The orc detected me indirectly via some other mobs in the room, which I killed first.
More strange pathing...

In the screen shot below, the mobs in the center of the screen are correctly approaching my character at the right of the screen. If I move diagonally down and to the right (just around the corner), however, the mobs change direction and start heading to the left, AWAY from my character. I can make the mobs go back and fourth indefinitely this way. I have made a backup copy of my save files in case they are needed to help duplicate this bug.

This is a known bug. Everytime you play in the orc prides, all monsters will aim at the wrong side of the level if you move close to the right border. After a while, every monster on the level will be "stuck" on the left border.
Probably some miscalculation leading to a negative horizontal coordinate for pathing.

I think this is something else, because after I posted the bug report I ran next to the vault directly above the mobs (in the middle of the room) and got the same behavior there by breaking and reestablishing LOS to them.
