If you hold out on him halfway only, the Orthanc route - complete the plot and go back, you can ask if he's ready yet (you killed him already ) and he sends you through the trapdoor again - that's relatively okay, but on escaping the tower you encounter the portal-building npc again, and the game hangs at the stage where you'd give him the two materials.

I went back too and was surprised to find Tannen home again.

After finishing Tannen's whole deal we built the portal (me and the Minis Tirith guy).

Then out of pure curiosity I went to his house and he (tannen) gives me this dialogue.

How may I be of service good dwarf?
a) How fares your research? Are we ready to create the portal?
