Battle call affects the caller

Battle call affects the caller -- sometimes more than once, if the message log is to be believed:
"Fred uses Battle Call."
"Fred is called to battle!"
"Fred is called to battle!"
I have it at level 1 and using it in an empty room will move me one or two squares, in a way that I can't predict. Using it when monsters are around seems to have the desired effect, in that it brings the monsters next to me, but I never know where I'll end up..
