ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I just started playing this game and am learning using the Alchemist character. Normally, when I die, I go into space, come back, and use up one life. However, a couple of times this doesn't happen. My character simply disappears and I'm put in control of my golem. I click on my character in the upper left of the screen and a little box on the lower right says that I'm at -2% or -11 points (or thereabouts). At that point, all I can do is play the golem -- I can't figure out how to use a life and come back, since that screen doesn't seem to open. I've had the golem wait awhile, thinking that maybe I was only "sort of dead" but nothing changes.

Why does dying by only a point or two not send me to space?

If you have a permanent ally, such as Alchemist's golem, you'll switch control to it upon death.

There's nothing you can do tho, so just self-destruct the golem

Now I'm curious.. has anyone ever managed to win the game by playing just the golem? All the way from level 1 to level 50?

Nope, can't do that unless you get an addon to allow it, as ya can't change floors if you're dead even if controlling a golem/wtw/etc
