Do you have to use it before dying, or it uses automatically after dying?

You use it before dying. Upon death, the prompt will include the ability to revive with the blood of life. And there is no restriction on when you need to drink it, so just drink it as soon as you find it.

If you've gained the Lich evolution, then this will - upon death - override the Blood of Life (you'll get a message saying this when you "die") so there are no downsides to drinking it.
