ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I can't seem to get past the first quest. I've taken out the bad guy but the second objective doesn't do anything. Any help? Auto-explore only seems to take me back to the second area.

use the rod of recall from the boss to get to the worldmap then find the next zone.
