ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

Game on normal, level 28 and died for the first time against the master because I was stupidly sloppy. Then, on the character screen near where it shows my life, it read this: death -20.

So, what does that mean? Did I lose a permanent 20 life or..?

Did you perhaps have some gear that says 'Only die when reaching: -20.00 life' on?

I don't know but that's precisely the kind of answer that justifies the dumb question section, ha ha.
