ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I started playing a Paradox Mage recently, and went into the Maze at level 17. It was the demon corrupted version, but things were going smooth until the giant tainted Minotaur boss on last level. The boss teleport-ed me to him and started strangulating me, which caused a long lasting silence. Which sucks, as that meant I basically could do nothing. To my surprise, my Teleportation Rune was also unusable.

He killed me 3 times with strangulation before I managed to take him down, so I figured I would ask for advice.

Are there any good strategies for dealing with silence when you are playing a mage? I thought that runes could be used even if you were silenced, like a worn item can. ( I had Kor's Fall staff, and could cast the bone spear). Any thoughts?

Yeah, activatable items are a special exception to silence for some reason. (And your sustains, those won't get knocked out.) Other than that, everything with Is: A Spell is affected.

If you think you can't survive the unfortunate event in which you get silenced by a grapple, you have two options.

1. Use the Wild: cures physical inscription. (Or a salve, if you have medical injectors.) This hopefully removes the grappled effect, though it might not work if you have multiple physical ailments.

2. Have Silence resistance/immunity. You will still be grappled, but getting silenced by it is a separate check made when the grappling begins.

Grapple is a special type of silence that comes as a side effect of a physical affliction, however. Most silences are mental. If you need to counteract these you want:

1. A Wild: cures mental inscription (or salve).

2. A tool slot torque that removes a silence effect.

3. Silence resistance/immunity works here too, of course.

I had a rune of Shatter afflictions in my pack, would that have worked?

No, 'Rune of Shatter Afflication' itself is a spell, so you can't use it if you are silenced.

Right right, that makes sense. OK, so that's why its recommended to use those types of infusions. Always seemed less powerful then a giant shield to me, but I'm seeing the benefits now.

No, Crushing Hold doesn't check silence resist.
