ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

So I did everything, killed the lone wolf, quest completed... and no apparent way to move into the campaign... what critical detail did I miss reading?

It's been a long time since I did the tutorial, but if I recall correctly you don't actually "continue" to the main campaign. You just start a new game.

Tried that, the only thing it lets me do is the tutorial again with a new character

Change to the not tutorial campaign?
You aren't forced to do the tutorial.
