ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

If you're an archmage or other caster class, do you let the two bad guys finish the ritual in the volcano so that if and when you beat them you get the fully powered up Staff of Absorption? Or would you rather not take the risk/don't care about post victory content like Atamathon/Linanil/Infinite Dungeon? As I understand it, if they finish then the final fight with them is a bit harder, although I'm not sure how much or in what ways.

You get the Awakened Staff of Absorbtion if you stop them at the Scar, not sure if you get anything different if you fail to stop them.

Ohhhhh... so you get penalized for not stopping them? My only encounter so far with the two was on normal, and I'd failed to stop them, and I got destroyed multiple times in the final battle.

I thought the ritual at the scar was to awaken the staff. And that if you stopped them it wouldn't be awakened. Seems counter intuitive.

No, I'm saying that you get the Awakened Staff of Absorbtion after you kill them at the end of the game. But I had stopped them at the scar.

Pardon me for the bump, but maybe it could give more information.
If I recall correctly, in high peak (almost final boss area), you will encounter and fight Sun Paladin Aeryn, and that is, long story short, because you didn't manage to stop the sorcerers at the charred scar. If you defeated her you can choose to spare her or kill her, which i prefer the former, because if she is alive she may help you to fight the last boss.
If you managed to stop them at charred scar, you will not encounter her at high peak, and she will automatically help you in fighting the last boss.
