What is the staff trainer supposed to teach you for 750g?

I go to the staff trainer in Angolwen with the staff combat tree learned and activated (thus seemingly having the 100g and 500g options covered), with 750+ gold on hand and no points placed in the tree. But when I request the staff training, I get no option other than "no thanks".

I assumed the "I can teach you more refined techniques for 750 gold" meant that maybe I could buy one or more points in the tree without having to spend actual generic points, but apparently not(?)

If it matters, I'm playing an alchemist, so I didn't actually have to BUY the previous tiers of training. I've also previously floated points in and out of "channel staff", though they are currently cleared out.

What am I missing here?

You can only get the 750 gold option if you paid for the 500 gold option. You aren't missing anything as an alchemist, as buying training as a class that doesn't start with the category can't result in a higher talent mastery than the alchemist starts with.

The 100 gold option reveals it if it's hidden for your class, so you can unlock it with a category point.

The 500 gold option unlocks it, saving you a category point. You don't need it revealed first to do this, so if you plan to do so, skip the 100 gold training.

If you paid 500 gold, paying 750 gold increases the talent multiplier.

Of note is that if before paying 500 gold, you learn one of the talents in the tree without learning the category from an alchemist escort, results in having 0.1 higher talent mastery than you would otherwise.

All of these same rules apply to buying mindstar mastery in zigur (inluding the last part about an alchemist escort, though you have to betray him to zigur instead).

Thanks for the response - very useful info for future characters.

Free generic points seemed to good to be true, but I couldn't figure out what else the 750g could be adding to an already learned and unlocked tree.

So out of curiosity, what are the multiplier values we're talking here? I was thinking I'd read that you should never learn the tree from an escort quest because it gave you a lower value than buying it from the trainer (0.8 vs 1.0, I think). But is that 1.0 (if that value is correct) before or after the 750g expenditure? If the 500g gives you the 1.0 multiplier, what does the 750g take it up to?

That's for the entire tree or just the talent(s) you selected individually? ...Though, as a typical staff user, I'd assume the overall value of this is probably unlikely to ever be worth passing on the +2 magic reward you could have instead.

It gives +0.1 to the entire tree. I think after spending 500 gold it has 1.1, and in any case spending 750 gold adds 0.2

Always take talents from escorts.

Yeah, a generic talent point is worth way more than +2 to a stat.

Staff Combat is a leftover from older versions of the game. You aren't meant to hit things with a staff.
