Greetings all,

I have a few questions for you folks, because I didn't receive a clear answer when I asked via IRC.

1.) When you create a character on a certain version, then update the game to the next version, how is your character handled? Is directly converted, taking care of any retroactive changes that may be in effect due to balance/etc changes?

2.) If conversion takes place for a class or race that had changes applied to it, do you reset the points for the affected talents? If not, how would someone reset a talent if this were the case?

I'm mainly asking this, as there's a new update on the horizon as many of you realize (1.5.0). I'm currently using 1.4.9, and will be trying the Skeleton race out, for example, and want to be sure I won't be wasting my time, if any retroactive changes won't be applied when updating/converting my character to 1.5.0 when it's released.

If anyone can decisively answer these questions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I had the same question and didn't get an answer, so I went digging in the faq and found this:

"Then why can't I load my character in the new release?
Check the "show old characters" on the load screen. Sometimes upgrading versions may break a character however, beware."

My guess is they don't make any guarantees about characters or items being stable from one release to the next. That being the case I plan on waiting for 1.5 to drop before playing further.

Thanks for the reply, I also did a little testing.

Made a Skeleton on 1.4.9, then tried loading him on 1.5.0. Got a warning about using an old version, option 1 was to download all the old data for previous version, (and just use old version, I suppose), or to proceed anyways.

I chose the option to proceed.

It seems that it's sort of broken if you just proceed

For example, I had put some points into the Skeleton talent on 1.4.9, then noticed what my stats were for Str and Dex.

I then loaded the character in beta 1.5.0. The talent tooltips were updated with the new stat scaling value (gives more Str and Dex), but my actual stats remained unchanged, as if the game logic didn't re-evaluate my talents and re-apply any changes that affected my character. I also tried saving/reloading, and also changing zones, and the stat bonus remained unchanged.

In conclusion, it seems kinda borked. However, one would assume it wouldn't be too hard to fix, just need to do a logic check on all talents and re-initialize their effects; I wonder why that isn't being done. Hmm...

Anyways, I think I'll also wait until 1.5.0 is actually released before I play any more.
