ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

When you die, you get an option to save your character to a file. That options seems to do nothing for me.

To be clear, I HATE asking questions like this. I much prefer to look up information myself. I've found very little though, and none of it matches my experience. When I press the button, I see my character sheet, and that's it. No file, no feedback, nothing. I'd normally assume I was doing something wrong, but I've found no information newer than 4 years old, so I figure it's equal odds that the information is outdated, wrong to begin with, or I've done something stupid.

So could someone be kind enough to give me a current explanation of what the character dump option is supposed to do? Then I can figure out if I'm messing things up or the game is.

The file will be found under your t-engine profile

Again, I tried looking up what little I could before asking. There's no file I can find. No character dump folder in my profile. So unless they've changed the name of the folder and I'm not recognizing the file when I see it, it's not there.

If I'm understanding you right, you are choosing the 'Character Dump' option on death, and the character sheet pops up... and that's it, end of process? If that's the case, you're missing the last step, which took me quite a while to figure out, as well.

When the character sheet pops up you have to press 'u' to actually save the file. The instructions for this are in small text at the top of the character sheet, and pretty easy to overlook. When you press 'u', it should pop up a message giving you the exact path to the file, but it should be something like users/yourname/t-engine/4.0/tome/character-dumps.

Yes, you understood correctly. Yes, that was what was happening. Ugh.

I really did look at the character sheet too. Created several test characters just to murder them, to try and figure out what was happening. I looked for any indication of what to do. I guess I just missed it in the middle of the mundane navigation directions.

Ugh.

I will say, at first I just assumed that choosing the save to file option would, you know, save a file. I don't think that was a particularly irrational assumption. Ugh.

Oh well. Not like I'm telling anyone anything new. Everyone knows this games isn't the most accessible to new players. Thanks again for the help.
