No fire resistance, but not damaged by fire...

I ran into an eternal bone giant on high peak with my skirmisher that had over 80% physical resistance, but no fire resistance listed when I inspected him. I keep star shot, which does fire damage, with me for cases like this. The odd thing was that I was doing some small damage with normal physical damage shot, but star shot didn't do any damage at all. The giant had no damage shield nor bone shield that I could see. What other things can I look for when inspecting a creature to know that fire (or some other damage) will not do anything to it other than the resistances?
I ended up scurrying like a scared hobbit to the next level of high peak because I couldn't do enough damage to the damned thing...

Inspect and read their talents. But keep in mind they can have additional effects from items. Once your attack connects read the combat log.
To answer your question: affinity to damage type, psionic shields, high armor and hardiness, rune: lightning.
If they have a combination of effects and armor the following order applies:

pretty sure psionic shield can only take 50% of any damage of the valid type, unless he has transcendence active for the type.
or unless its from a torque.
as for affinity, i... don't think it prevents you from taking damage, instead it heals you for the % of the original damage.

Star shot sounds like a weapon attack. Chances are, it was reduced by armor. And IIRC, Bone Giants have pretty good all resist too.

The log generally says what reduced the damage.
