the items you'd get from farportals/ambushes transmog for a fraction of their normal value (i'm pretty sure), but can you alch them into gems and sell the gems full value?

Most likely.

Don't items ALWAYS transmog for a fraction of what you could sell them for?

I don't remember too well, but I could have sworn it was ~10% and like 1 less decimal place.

In general it is better to turn an item into a gem, then to sell or transmog the gem. Except maybe for artifacts or randarts when the amounts are roughly equivalents or slightly better for a direct transmog.

i believe a value of a gem is 4 gold per tier, (not counting artefact gems), and the most gold you can ever sell an item for, is 50 in the emporium... i think.

Nope. It's usually the same value, except for a weird rounding error, unless you hit a cap (25 for transmog?).
In the case of the farportal, they sell
and transmog for a fraction of their usual value. But I don't know if this would carry over to gems that you make out of the items.

Doesn't that defeat most of the purpose of having the farportal at all?

the purpose of exploratory farportal is ability to max out your lvl, and have an extra chance for a usable item.
right?
unless you were talking about selling elsewhere.
yeah. depends what you need.
randarts from the rescued merchant can be useful.

With level scaling maxing your level early is very little help. Some very slow leveling races might need to farportal to hit level 50 before high peak, but there's quite a lot of experience to be had on high peak itself.
One extra merchant randart is usually worth several random randarts because you can guarantee it's for a slot you want and it's generated with arcane/antimagic usability filters. The farportal is the highest risk place to grind, it should have commensurate return.

Unless it is an optional challenge like the Sludgenest. In which case it doesn't have to.
The only risk is that if you get a randboss you can't kill, you lose the ability to use the portal, or you die (or both).
I'm happy with that for a source of extra bosses.

It's also one of the very few dungeons where if you get a bad spread of rares on the first level you can't escape to the world map.

but you can cast teleport!
and land in the middle of more rares...
uh...
unless you are a ziguranth...
then no runes for you.
