Unable to log in

I mainly play TOME4 on my desktop using Steam but downloaded the game from the website on my laptop. I am unable to log in on my laptop as I usually log in using Steam. Is there any way to log in to the game on my laptop without installing Steam?

Create an account on te4.org, then use that website to link to your steam account.

That worked for me, thank you.
My unlocks did not transfer over with it. Will I have to unlock everything all over again?

Did you click the link on the Steam tab of your te4.org profile *while* you were "currently logged ingame and playing a character"? That's essential for the unlocks to transfer over.

I did not. Does that mean I can't have them transfer over now since I've already linked it?

No, just attempt it again by clicking the link again.

It doesn't seem to be working. I made a Dwarven Berserker and am in Reknor as we speak. I click on the link in the Steam portion of the profile and it says to go in game to confirm but nothing comes up. Am I doing something wrong?

What are you expecting to come up in-game? If you have achievements, then yes, they should pop-up as a series of little windows if you're running in Steam. I'm not sure about unlocks. I didn't get any notifications for them. Rather, they are available to me when I try to start a new character. Are you saying that the unlocks that are listed on your te4.org profile page do not show up when you try to start a new character?
The only other thing I can think of is that some people say it takes a bit of time for things to transfer. Perhaps you should log out and log in again. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

I'd like to be able to make a Shalore Chronomancer however both are still locked in the character creation after trying this method. Also my transmog chest is gone.
I'll try logging out and back in and maybe waiting for a bit. You've definitely been helpful thus far!

It seems to have my information. It has my donation status and I can make a stone warden. I guess unlocks can't be transferred.

No, unlocks can be transferred. I bought the game on Steam a week ago and transferred all of my unlocks from a few years of playing the free version.
1. Are your unlocks listed on your profile page at te4.org? Does it list there the unlocks you believe you have?
2. In addition, are your unlocks specified as such in the relevant text file in your Tome folder on your hard drive? This is *not* the folder in which Steam installed the game (i.e., C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\TalesMajEyal). Rather, I'm talking about the folder in your [user] folder in Windows that all installations of ToME refer to. That pathname is:
C:\Users\[username]\T-Engine\4.0\profiles\online\modules\tome\allow_build.profile
Open "allow_build.profile" in Notepad and verify that your unlocks are recorded there. If not, that explains why you're not seeing them.
Ordinarily, you unlock something in the game, it updates that text file, and then it updates your online profile according to that text file.

You don't need to be logged into the game when you link Steam to your account.
All you have to do is log into the game and sit in the main menu and give it time to sync.

So why does the Steam tab at the te4.org site say, "(You need to be currently logged ingame and playing a character for it to work)."??
And I'm having a hard time parsing your advice: "You don't need to be logged into the game... All you have to do is log into the game..." Huh?

Try not skipping the second half of the first line, and it makes sense.

I didn't skip it. I read it multiple times. I couldn't have put in the ellipsis without reading the material that I elided!

I still find it confusing. Perhaps you're making a subtle distinction between "being logged into the game and playing a character" and "being logged into the game and *not* playing a character." But that isn't registered in the words you used, so I think it's plausible that a reader can get confused as to what you're saying.
How about if I start again?
You say: "You don't need to be logged into the game when you link Steam to your account."
The te4.org site says: "You need to be currently logged ingame and playing a character for it to work."
Who is right?
