Safe ways to make a stash

Hi there !

I'm playing my 1st character on ToME so most of my questions may be really dumb.
Anyway...

Because merchants buy your items at very cheap prices and resell them with a heavy price multiplier, I was planning to make a stash with some unused but cool items instead of saling them at a vile price. Thus, I dropped a pile of artifacts & other miscellania in some corner of the city of Derth, then I entered the Old Forest (and lost several lives there because this Wrathroot guy is definitely not a very friendly vegetable  ).
Back to Derth, I found - without surprise, I admit - that the stash has been severely looted.
So... is there any safe way to make a stash somewhere if I want to save items for later without burdening my character ? Or can I only sell/re-buy items in shops ?

In the dungeon hidden deep in Old Forest you can get a place to stash stuff. In the mean time, drop items inside vaults (rooms blocked from detection and digg with a warning when you open the door) if you find them, items inside don't expire.

I also think - but not 100% sure - that artifacts won't disappear if dropped, no matter how much time passed.

You may be right : BTW, the only item I found when I wnet by to my stash is an artifact.

I just found the small lumberjack village, the one rampaged by a Cursed guy. I guess I could use some houses there to stash my stuff later.
Nevermind, back into the Maze where I expect to losse my last life (if not here, then the Sandworm Hole shall kill me once again, foocking worms BTW :o ) so I may try this trick with my next (and second) character.

Houses in the Lumberjack Village aren't vaults.

OK, thanks for the tip. I won't put stuff there, then...

PS : didn't found any dungeon in the Auld Forest, excepted the one in the middle of the Lake - which I didn't explore very far because my poor noob character does not breathe underwater
Did I miss something despite extensive use of "auto-explore" ?

just search everything and you will eventually find it.

when you are on the way to the place, you will feal like death is around every corner.
when you get to the place, you will face the doom.
when you cross the gate, you will be like "omg, omg, omg, omg, omg, omg, omg, omg, omg, omg, ..."

There's air bubbles in there you can use, though you will have to explore it manually.

In general, auto-explore won't miss it (or really anything else, for that matter).

You don't actually have to open vaults to make a safe stash, any tile near the vault that says 'cannot teleport here' will do.

Try looking in the Raloren Camp. That place usually spawns at least one vault for me.

Just figured it right now while giving a second try to this underwater dungeon with my current dwarf berserker.
I was so obsessed with the fear of drowning my character the first time that I didn't even noticed the bubbles

Speaking of vaults, my Dwarf Berserker has just found the Item Vault in the Sher Tul Ruins.
I'm trying to place an item inside, I choose a white basic infusion for testing purposes and then pops the following message : "Transfering this item will place a level 15 requirement on it, since it has no requirements".
What does it mean ?

All right, I think I've figured it at least : I guess it means a character must be level 15 at least to retrieve this item from the Vault.
OK then.

Now, back on standard vaults : before entering the Lake of Nur, my character cleaned the dungeon on the last level of the Old Forest, then stashed there 5 valuable items I planned to use later. I used a room inside the vault, with the "cannot teleport to this place" tag (*)
But now I'm back to the stash and the room is empty.
Looks like vaults and no-teleport places are not safe for stashes, after all...

Code: Select all

(*) which tag is questionable BTW because I can teleport my dwarf here : I did it several times using an artifact's power.

Sorry if you know this, but if you have the Sher'tul fortress you also have a purpose-built stash room. The totally empty room above the item vault will not just keep your items from despawning, but also sort them if you drop something there.

Weird. I've done this a zillion times and I've never lost anything. Which vault was it?
