I am very confused by the topic of save file invalidation. What is it? What are it's tangible effects on the save game, if any?

Certain addons can choose to invalidate save files used while they are active. Thus, nothing is saved to the online profile.

So its about the online profiles?

In this case, I am specifically referring to the activation of developer mode.

Yeah, all it does is disable the online profile.
