how does the engine handle overlapping image?

hello! i am currently creating paperdoll images for the game but they "need" to overlap to each other to hide some flaws.

Is there an image hierarchy on which goes first? to be specific, i am creating upper body, lower body, shoes, shield and weapons.

Paperdoll handling is ToME-specific.
