ToME: the Tales of Maj'Eyal

I'm a few hours into my first game of ToME4. I made it through the Scintillating Caves and the Rhaloren Camp, killing the bosses for both. Now I realize that it appears that, on the worldmap, I'm trapped on a small island that has only the first town and those two initial dungeons. Is there a way to traverse water and/or forests and get to other dungeons and parts of the worldmap?

There should be a path between the two clumps of trees you can follow north to get to the rest of the map.

If you hit 'z', auto-explore ought to take you through the path in the trees.
