Can't betray escorts?

Read the sign in Zigur, although my character died shortly after. Now, on my Thalore Rogue, I couldn't betray the first escort I found...do I need to have a -surviving- character read the sign? I guess it'd explain why achievements like Arena keep showing up, since my characters keep dying and doing it over. .-.

you cant betray if you have a spell or a rune. If an item give you a spell ability or if you inscribed a rune of phase door (or any rune) you cannot betray escort to zigur.

I'm pretty sure I didn't. I was a level 1 Rogue, and I don't think I had either of those. I think the only spellish thing I had was an arcane forces wizard hat, but I sold that before entering the floor the Escort was on.
Unless....the first Thalore ability counts as a spell, which would explain that. x3

Thalore racials don't count as spells. However, if you have any equipment that grants a spell (wands with the volcanic ego, for instance, hats of the brotherhood granting arcane eye, etc.) that does count. These either count as having a spell, or in the case of volcano, actually give you a mana meter, which never goes away. Arcane equipment itself does not count.

Weird. I don't think I had anything that gave stuff like that. It was literally on the second floor of Nogros. Huh.
I'll give it another shot in a bit. For reference, though...what should be happening when I get the betray option? Does it come up when you first find the escort, or once you get them to the portal?

The betray option is given when you meet the escort and have the choice to either convey him to the portal and get an arcane reward or betray him and get a nature/psi reward.
Note that only magical escorts can be betrayed: seer, alchemist, anorithil, sun paladin and temporal explorer IIRC. Other escorts (thief, warrior, lormaster) are not magical and thus cannot be betrayed.

Ghostbuster probably has it. If you're dealing with a warrior escort, for example, there's no option to betray them. Zigur doesn't care about guys with swords.

Ah...that'd be it, then. Thanks. x3

I thought Rogue's started off with a Phase Door rune.

Maybe undead or shalore ones would, but the other ones start with the usual regen infusion and a physical wild infusion.

Ah, okay. I wasn't sure and I didn't have the ability to load up the game to find out.

I actually had that on my Thalore Mindslayer yesterday. Started on Norgos lair and at lv 2 on the third level of the lair I got a seer escort whom I couldn't betray.
Norgos ambushed us and I dealt with him after which I hit auto explore and later saw my escort death message. That was enough for me to start over.
With my new similar char I got a seer escort as well on second level of Norgos. This one I could betray. Beats me as to why I couldn't do it the first time.
No idea why
Patrick here couldn't betray his escort.

Were you wielding one of those staves at the time? Because that would have granted you the Command Staff spell, which is enough to prevent escort betrayal.

I thought about it myself well but then realized there would have been very little point in later unequipping it in favor of the starter sword.
